Abiona Sharpe and Kenchester Martin, both serving life sentences with the possibility of parole, built relationships of connection and trust with their MPPP Partners in 2023/2024. Here they describe working with their Partners:

“For twelve months I took a risk with my Partners Ashley and Danielle and they took a risk with me. We built trust by being honest with each other. I shared every part of my life with them, my offense, my family life, and they shared with me too. They helped me prepare my parole packet, and we talked a lot about what responsibility and accountability looks like. My Partners attended my parole hearing, and even though they could not sit next to me, I felt their presence. I brought to the hearing all that I had learned and all of the insight I had gained.”

"My Partners Janet and Leah helped me understand the true impact of the harm that I caused. They helped me further my own work towards self forgiveness and acceptance of accountability. Janet and Leah were honest with me, they allowed themselves to be vulnerable, and they were great listeners! My experience with my partners was life changing and even though I received a two year setback from the Parole Board I still feel like the experience was greatly beneficial. I will always treasure their words of support, encouragement and affirmation.”

MPPP’s 2023 and 2024 Accomplishments

  • MPPP trained 20 volunteer Partners

  • Beginning in Sept. 2023, MPPP Collaborated with 6 parole petitioners at MCI Norfolk, and in Sept. 2024, MPPP began collaboration with 6 additional petitioners at MCI Norfolk

  • MPPP is starting to work with additional petitioners from MCI Shirley

  • During petitioners’ hearings, Parole Board members praised petitioners for their thorough preparation and comprehensive parole packets

  • MPPP board members Patrick “Exact Proof Allah” Mayhew and Abiona Sharpe received unanimous positive votes for parole from the Parole Board! We look forward to continuing our work with them in the community!

  • MPPP petitioner Russell Regan, who has served 30 years in prison, received a unanimous positive vote for parole!

Interested in Becoming a Partner?

MPPP seeks a diverse group of volunteer Partners from the community. We welcome everyone who is interested to apply to become a Partner, including people with experiences with the criminal legal system, family members of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, and people who are fluent in Spanish.
